Tick bite fever is an infectious disease transmitted through the bite of a tick. Common symptoms consist of fever, headache, muscle pain, and a rash. A red skin sore with a dark center usually appears at the bite site. Symptoms typically manifest 4–10 days after being bitten.
Complications are uncommon, but they can involve inflammation of the joints. Certain individuals may not exhibit any symptoms.
Causes - Tick bite fever is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia africae, which is transmitted by ticks of the Amblyomma type. These ticks are usually found in tall grass or bushes rather than urban areas. Diagnosis is generally made based on symptoms and can be confirmed through culture, PCR, or blood tests.
Prevention - Although there is no vaccine available, prevention can be achieved by covering the skin, using DEET, or wearing clothing treated with permethrin.
