A Glimpse into History
Centuries ago, long before the village of Storms River was established, herds of elephants roamed this land. They migrated across the country toward the drylands northeast of present-day Port Elizabeth. Returning with the seasons, these majestic giants found solace in the cool serenity of the coastal forests. The Khoisan people lived peacefully alongside the elephants until 1879. That year, notable pass builder Thomas Bain first surveyed the area, uncovering the enchanting forest of Plettenberg Bay.
Many forestry workers discovered the village to be a peaceful retreat, leading to their settlement here. In 1841, Lieutenant Thomas Henry constructed a shooting box in Storms River. For many, hunting elephants for ivory became a sport and a perceived right. This trend of killing persisted for years, with nearly 64 elephants shot each month. Storms River was officially established in 1885 and became a crown village under British rule.
Today, only a solitary female elephant named Oupoot remains. She is the last survivor from the original herd of 400 elephants that once roamed the Knysna forest in South Africa.

While the restaurant was under reconstruction after a fire, guests can enjoy fine calamari and chips at the temporary facilities in the Cattle Baron restaurant.
The campsites feature clean and functional ablution facilities with hot running water, laundry services, a swimming pool, and amenities for those with disabilities. Some campsites that face the beachfront may experience strong winds and ocean spray, which can test your camping gear. During peak seasons, space may be limited, so we recommend choosing secluded campsites near the entrance. These spots are sheltered by hedges which provide excellent windbreaks on blustery days.
Activities and Attractions
One highlight of visiting Storms River Mouth is the famous starting point of the Otter Trail. If you are looking to challenge your hiking abilities, this trail is a must-try. Additionally, the suspension bridges offer breathtaking views of the woodland coastline. A short walk of just over 1.5 km will reward you with spectacular 180° panoramas of the area.
Activities in the region include hiking, kayaking, boat trips, and diving. You can also explore the intertidal zone during low tide. Remember, fishing is not permitted in this marine protected area, so be sure to respect the local regulations.
